There is a national movement to ensure that all students get a solid foundation in phonics as they learn to read, a strategy based on years of brain science research. To help districts and schools make this shift in their reading programs, literacy platform Lexplore has created a free online course that outlines easy steps for educators, reading coaches and principals.
Lexplore also provides a course for teachers on how to teach Phonics. That track is available here.

The short videos cover a range of simple strategies for restructuring an elementary reading program – including the history of teaching literacy, tips for identifying high-quality phonics instructional materials and checklists for school administrators and teachers.

This shift is key to helping the U.S. increase the number of students reading at grade level, which has declined to about 35% for fourth- and eighth-graders, according to the National Assessment for Educational Progress, or the Nation’s Report Card.

About Lexplore

Lexplore is an innovative rapid reading assessment powered by eye tracking and artificial intelligence. In just two minutes, educators get a clear view of a student’s reading level and recommendations for how to help them improve. Lexplore, founded in Sweden in 2016, is used by schools, tutors and therapists in the United States and around the world to help create the next generation of strong readers.

About the course

Shifting to Phonics is a mini-course on how to shift your school to science-based reading instruction. It is suitable for school leaders, coaches, curriculum instructors, and teachers who want to move their school from “balanced” literacy to a phonics-first approach. Our goal is for 100% of students to become proficient readers.

The course is presented by: Janine Walker Caffrey, CEO of Lexplore, Inc. Dr. Caffrey is a former superintendent and special education teacher.
