A Clear View of Reading – The Big 5 Series

Parents and teachers can work as a team this school year to ensure reading readiness. Through a series of insightful 30-minute webinars, literacy experts will define the five basic components of reading and offer suggestions and resources for parents and teachers to support reading proficiency in all learners. Each webinar will focus on one of “The Big 5” essential components of reading development.

1) Phonemic and Phonological Awareness

The first webinar focuses on phonemic and phonological awareness and explores how students learn to isolate and manipulate different sounds.  We will provide fun multi-sensory activities and resources that parents and teachers can use to help their readers develop these foundational skills. Our guest speaker, Kathleen Law, brings 13 years of experience as a first-grade teacher.  She has an M.A. in Education and is a certified Orton-Gillingham (OG) instructor through the Institute of Multisensory Education (IMSE).  Kathleen will be joined by our co-host, Janet Pedrazzi, a Kindergarten teacher with more than 20 years of experience grounded in the science of reading, an M.S in Elementary Education and Reading, a current doctoral student in Educational Leadership and the Director of Academic Content for Lexplore, Inc.

2) Building Phonics and Decoding Skills

The second webinar focuses on developing strong foundational skills in phonics and decoding, exploring how a systematic and multisensory approach to phonics instruction can reach all learners. 4) Comprehension

The fourth webinar will focus on comprehension and explore how you can help students develop good reading habits to think more deeply about the meaning of a text. 4) Vocabulary

The fifth webinar will explore strategies on how to increase vocabulary acquisition to develop reading comprehension and communication skills for all readers. In addition, there will be a focus on diving deeply into understanding the meaning of critical vocabulary words and how they play a role in academic success while and demonstrating meaningful activities and providing free resources.
