Don’t forget about the teachers!

Mental Health Awareness Week has brought increasing focus on the alarming rise in numbers of students seeking help from various different services, however, what about the teachers?

The Teacher Wellbeing Index of 2018 highlighted a worrying trend and rise in mental health issue amongst professionals within the sector. In fact, their findings actually reported that over 80% of teachers and senior leaders were suffering from work-related stress and more than 63% had seriously considered leaving the profession for good!

With teaching being arguably one of the most important jobs, it is time to radically change our school environments so they support and encourage our teachers rather than placing unnecessary pressures on those whose passion and skills inspire our next generations.

But how do we begin to improve teacher wellbeing when the day to day challenges of the classroom environment are often complex and unpredictable?

One of the biggest issues raised by teachers when looking at what contributed most to their stress within the workplace was the overwhelming impact had by their workload. In fact, according to the Department for Education workload is the most common reason for which many teachers leave the profession and others feel discouraged from joining.

So how do we combat overwhelming workloads when it seems teachers are under more pressure than ever before to collect data, which although appearing to have no apparent connection to teaching and learning is required by many schools.

For many, the answer to reducing workload and providing teachers with meaning full insights into their student’s learning lies in new technology. There are already many new tools which can really make a difference in the classroom, so teachers can spend more time with their pupils – usually the main reason they joined the profession in the first place.
